Our story

Every child deserves a voice, not just a few

At a time of deep division, young people's voices should be at the heart of our democracy. That shouldn't be open only to the children who already have the confidence, or who happen to grow up in the right place. We give every child the tools to speak up, listen, and make change.

How it began

Smart School Councils started with two friends, Asher and Greg, and one simple belief: every young person's voice matters.

With Asher's background in youth work and Greg's in policy, they set out to build a better way to involve pupils. The traditional school council was hard to run and only ever reached a small group of children. They reimagined it so that every class, and every child, could take part.

Over time the idea grew into something bigger: everyday debate and democracy, built into the rhythm of the school week. What began as a small project is now a growing movement, helping thousands of pupils across the UK speak up and lead.

Today we are an award-winning charity, trusted in 700 schools from infant classes to pupil referral units, helping over 250,000 young people find their voice. Backed by supporters like Brian Eno and Alastair Campbell, we are building a movement where every child is heard.

Why we exist

A school is not a school without its children. It is their school.

The old school council reached a handful of children and was a chore to run. We reinvented it. Now every child takes part, pupils lead, and real change happens, with the evidence to prove it.
