Five Easy Ways to Support Pupil Premium Pupils Through Your School Council
For many schools, supporting Pupil Premium pupils isn’t just about extra resources - it’s about creating meaningful opportunities for confidence, leadership, and growth. One of the simplest and most effective ways to do this is through your school council.
At St Vincent’s School in Liverpool, teacher Conor McSorley has seen first-hand how a more inclusive approach to pupil voice can help disadvantaged students thrive. By combining weekly debates with their Smart School Councils model, his pupils have gone from quiet observers to confident leaders.
Here are five easy ways to use your school council to support Pupil Premium pupils:
1. Start Small but Be Consistent
You don’t need big events to make an impact. At St Vincent’s, debates started with just three pupils - and now it’s a thriving club of ten. Consistency, even with small groups, helps pupils build routine, confidence, and trust.
2. Use Structure to Build Confidence
A simple, repeatable format makes it easier for quieter or less confident pupils to take part. Conor uses clear steps and roles, like appointing a “debate captain,” to give pupils ownership while reducing anxiety.
3. Let Pupils Take the Lead
Handing over responsibility can feel risky, but it pays off. At St Vincent’s, students now lead discussions, vote, and reflect without relying heavily on staff. When pupils see it’s their council, they rise to the challenge.
4. Connect Debates with Real-Life Issues
From voter turnout to friendship benches, linking discussions to real-world or school-based issues keeps pupils engaged and shows their voice has genuine impact. For disadvantaged students, this relevance is key to sparking interest.
5. Celebrate Every Voice
Make sure every contribution is valued - whether it’s through assemblies, displays, or leadership roles. Recognising small wins builds confidence and helps pupils feel their input really matters.
As Conor explains:
“If you give pupils responsibility, they rise to the challenge. Our council feeds into senior leadership, and our debate club prepares students to engage with complex topics confidently.”
